Consider therapy when…
Today I want to talk about when you should see a therapist. A lot of people assume that after a traumatic event time will heal itself. Whether it’s a big “T” traumatic event (something that threatened your life or your safety like a car accident, domestic violence, sexual abuse, etc) or a little “t” traumatic event (an event that had an impact on your like being laid off, divorce, loss of a friendship, or relationship, or even a dog) time frequently doesn’t heal.
Sometimes what ends up happening is that all of those thoughts, memories, and feelings get lumped up somewhere and suppressed. You move on you, return to work, take care of your family, and act like everything is OK…when it isn’t. These traumatic events eventually creep up and they do so often in the form of sadness, crying spells, anger, anxiety, panic attacks, and maybe even substance use (to name a few). If enough time passes you won’t even recognize why you’re feeling this way. You’ll just blow up at your spouse and never really understand why. When the reality is that this argument was tied to an event that happened to you 5 years prior. This is just to say that things often don’t resolve itself. If you’ve been through anything in your life that has caused you some type of harm, consider meeting with a therapist to work through it.
